A simple act of empathy blossomed into a life-changing miracle for a deserving Navy veteran.
While sitting on a flight at John Wayne Airport, a traveler named Thackery noticed an airport fuel mechanic hobbling painfully across the tarmac. Deeply moved by his struggle, she filmed a short video and shared it on TikTok, asking if anyone knew his identity.
The video quickly captured the hearts of millions. Soon, viewers identified the dedicated worker as 64-year-old Navy veteran James Blair, who had been working at the airport since 2006 despite suffering from severely deteriorated knees.
A Community Unites for a Hero
Blair was unable to retire because his income directly supported his elderly mother’s hospice care. Once the online community discovered his situation, Blair’s boss drove 90 minutes to his home to help him set up a GoFundMe campaign.
In a beautiful display of generosity, over 6,000 donors contributed to the fund, raising more than $180,000. Thackery later met Blair in person to present him with the life-changing funds.
“I was speechless because I felt like the world showed up,” Thackery told KSL News, “and I think in these times we need people like that.”
Blair, deeply moved by the gesture, expressed his profound gratitude. “I believed in God, but I didn’t really believe in God. But now, with the angel sitting next to you, it’s amazing,” Blair told Thackeray as reported by KSL. “I have a hard time working to pay bills, so other people probably have the same problems. When they’re giving money they really can’t spare, that amazes me. I’m just blown away.”
